This workshop is something that is going to really confuse people and they will have no idea what to do with this. Coding is a nightmare and time consuming but in the end it's going to be nice to referrer back and take a quick glance and know what I was saying. Coding takes a lot of time so collect data sooner then later to give yourself a enough time. Once your able to code your data it will make it easy for the final write up. This workshop at first was nuts to me but now that I've experienced it twice I think I got a small, very small hang on it. Still frustrating but will work out in my benefit later down the road. YAY for CODING! haha :)

This coding workshop made me become more aware what I am signing up for when I give out my email address. It was shocking to know that your email can get leak out to other companies and they will send you spam like no tomorrow! I thought it was fun sorting out the different categories that were provided in the slides. It made me realize that more than half my inbox is just spam. I am glad I have two email address because I get spam a lot in one and my private one is for school/work. After coding everything, it was much easier to eyeball all the services and spam I have been receiving for these past few weeks. Although it is a lot of work to code all the data, I think it would be worth it in the end knowing I have done so much work. I am glad I learned the techniques of coding now than down the road when I am trying to sort out my data/surveys for my research paper.

My preliminary thoughts when hearing about coding was that it would lean more towards a quantitative side of research as opposed to a qualitative side of research. While that could possibly be the case (depending on the data you are collecting and the research question), I found out that coding is just another way of organizing data and is needed in order to access your data with ease. The topics in coding should be qualitative topics and should also pertain to the general research of the project. Having the e-mail exercise was essential for me in understanding coding because I became a little overwhelmed with the different types of coding that are available and which ones to chose. I understand now that coding, while it takes some work, is meant to provide a researcher with ease of access to information gathered. On a personal note, I feel that I hate my e-mail address. Now that I took the time to analyze it, I realize that I am the biggest spam magnet ever.

The coding workshop is going to come in handy for all of you who have never coded data before. From experience, it is a lot of work and it is time consuming, so do not put off coding your data till the end. Plus you want to code your data was soon as you collect it, that way you can look at you coded data and possible find answers to your research question. Also do not start collecting data till you are working on the last form of the project. You need to do your research on your topic before you can collect data because it will help prepare you with knowledge and experience on the topic area. Though I have already done this workshop before, it was a great refresher. I know I will still refer back to this workshop when I start coding my data. Good luck everyone! :-)

Oh the joys of coding, and all of the work you have to do! Just kidding, coding really is not that bad once you get the hang of how it works. This workshop is extremely helpful and after having done coding last semester in this class, I have found ways to use coding in my every day life. For those of you who have not yet done coding, or are doing it for the second or third time, be patient! It takes time to get used to, but I promise that it will all get easier. This workshop breaks it down, but the only part that can be confusing still is the categorizing aspect (in my opinion). I think it is confusing at times only because there are so many different ways you can categorize things, or ways to do it, but you must find what you are most comfortable with! My partner for our last research project, Evan Taylor, is the coding guru and he just so happens to be in this class! I will definitely not wait till the last minute to do any of your coding, it takes forever! However, once it's done it looks like it should take twenty minutes- do not be deceived by this!

Slightly confusing with the categorization thing, but I think I got it a little better after actually doing the exercise. Unfortunately all of my email advertising is basically associated and only one that is solicited and this is going back more than a month. I think I will go back and review my coding scheme for my 151i Class and if I've still got issues I can always come back to this workshop. This workshop though, wasn't as confusing as the in-class workshop we did in 151i.

Oh boy, I just went over the workshop and it seems a bit confusing but I am going to take it step by step. I have never done coding before but I feel as though with practice and patience I can conquer it. Hopefully with the two workshop tasks we will be doing I will get the hang of it for the project.

This coding workshop is very helpful, even for a person who has taken a class with Ted before. Coding takes a lot of time. The quote that Professor Coopman talks about in class where we should always allow double the amount of time we think we have. We that quote comes from coding. Coding can be simple like the workshop tells us, we do it everyday. The thing is that it is very time consuming, and repetitive. From experience though, it is very helpful to learn how to code. Coding does allow you to take a quick look back at your work to get the information you need, instead of reading through all your data again. I have also found this workshop useful for me because it has giving me a refresher on coding. Knowing to understand the research first is important and then moving from there. Finally, even though this is my second time looking at this coding workshop, I still don't get it 100%. I know how to do it and how to get information out of it, but I'm not always sure I am grabbing the right information out. What makes something a category and something else a subcategory. It just takes a lot of work.

I found this coding workshop to be quite fun although long and tedious. It was my first time learning this and I'm so glad I finally did. It was interesting and provided me insight into my habits and life. It also scared me a bit realizing how many different companies have my information. This is a great lesson to be more careful about whom I share my email address with and whom they will possibly share it with. Besides that, I really enjoyed categorizing everything. I'm already planning out a list on other things in my life that I would like to code.

I found this workshop to be interesting. I am glad we did this exercise in preparation for the "real thing." I believe this is good practice for our real fieldwork. This was a lot of work, but enjoyable at the same time. Also, I am glad we did this assignment so I can see who I need to unsubscribe from in terms of email lists. The bottom line is that I have the gist of it, but I am sure me and everyone else wouldn't turn down any additional practice for the future.

Very interesting and revealing. I never took the time to really look at who has been emailing me. I definitely turned up my spam blocker settings after this. The process of coding this data is very time consuming though. Its also a little confusing and difficult to understand what I should really be observing.

The Coding Workshop seems like an interesting method to analyzing data. I am glad that there was at least a disclaimer that coding isn't a simple concept despite it being similar to what we do every day (such as how we organize our clothing or organize our music by genre) which makes it more practical. I like how we got a brief overview of the different methods of coding such as lit, personal experience and emergent coding because it just gives a different perspectives how to go about your data and coding it. After viewing the workshop and doing the assignment that we will further work with in class, I can't say that I got the whole method of coding down but I am eager to see how as an individual and as a whole in class how we can improve on it.

This workshop was frustrating! I think once I code a few more times I'll get the hang of it. For the most part, I found myself overwhelmed by the tediousness of it. I hope that I will perhaps learn to like it? Or maybe I learn to do it with better precision.

Part One of the Coding Workshop wasn't too bad, but it definitely was time consuming! I can see how in the long run this process will help keep data organized and easy to find, especially since we set-up our coding the way we interpret it. Although coding will eventually be useful, I'm not looking forward to how much time it's going to consume, but I'm persevering for the long haul!

This took a long time to do. I usually delete all my commercial emails as they come in through my phone. It was hard for me to stop deleting them for this coding. the coding part was a bit confusing. I wasn't too sure about the categories. as i was filling in the categories i never noticed how much of these commercial emails i receive everyday. maybe its time i just delete this account and get a new one. I know i have tried to unsubscribe on various occasions but i keep getting a lot of these emails. maybe its just yahoo. this workshop was helpful but i am still unclear about a lot of things when it comes to coding.

This concept was a little harder to grasp than expected. The idea seems simple, organize your data, by the means to go about that are very complex and time consuming. I am glad I'm not alone when I say that this was a bit frustrating and confusing. I will definitely need to go back over this workshop again when we code for our projects. I already have strict settings on my email about spam and stuff so my inbox wasn't as full as it could have been. Overall, interesting work shop and I'm looking forward to the second part!

coding, like eveyone has mentioned, a simple idea that is more complicated when acually doing. I thought this workshop was put together well and has very detailed information that breaks this idea down in every way. Because i am already familiar with coding i use this work shop as a refrence to make sure i am getting everything correct. Overall mastering this idea will make connecting your data and your conclusion together, which is the whole point of a project. Thansks for the workshop!

Before taking the coding workshop I was actually really nervous about it. I had no idea what coding would entail and from what I heard in class and from others who have taken I classes.. coding isn’t exactly the time of your life. So I wasn’t looking forward to it all. After, taking the workshop I’m a bit relieved. I understand that it’s not going to be easy and that it can be tedious and time consuming, but I think if you have a topic your actually interested in it shouldn’t be that bad. If you have a good topic I think going through your data will be interesting and coding won’t seem like such a drag. But still.. I’m just not to excited about how time consuming it may be. And it seems like it’s easy to make minor mistake with coding.. Anyway, this workshop was longer than your others, but I didn’t mind at all because I went into it really interested and wanting to learn and comprehend coding.
